Lentils are a fine, but undervalued ingredient of thick soup. If we add vegetables, herbs and slices of sausages we get a traditional German dish. Thick lentil soup is great for winter dinners. If we would like to prepare the soup according to the German recipe, we should add vinegar. I prefer it without vinegar.

We all like pikelets with apples. Today it turns out that apple pie is much tastier than traditional cakes. The not-so-sweet pastry covers up the sweet-and-sour apple slices in a thin layer. In this dish there are many more apples than in the pikelets. I think this is the reason why the taste of apples is much stronger.

In my family nobody likes Brussels sprouts very much, so I prepare salads with this vegetable when my family eats lunch elsewhere. The salad tastes great as a hot dish but could be served with meat as well. It also tastes good as a cold salad. If we would like the salad to be more filling, we should add some slices of fried sausages or smoked bacon.

We can now buy fresh lettuce, coleslaw, olives and tomatoes in every grocery store. Do you remember how it used to be? A few years ago, our mums had to prepare every salad from scratch.
I have some childhood memories of salads that I would like to share with you.
